  Hi, 各位 SEPCOIII英语研习社的朋友们大家好，我是本期讲师高园园！作为公司EPCO全业务链条中的重要一环，鸿瑞咨询设计人员在开展电站设计、咨询工作时，要阅读大量业主标书、技术要求等文件，同时也要不断学习和阅读国际标准。

许多设计人员在阅读英语技术资料的时候总会面对同一个问题：很多专业词汇拼写复杂，理解上有难度而实际上这类英语归属于科技英语范畴，在词法上具有鲜明特点了解和掌握科技英语的构词特点将会在很大程度上帮助设计人员把复杂的专业词汇化难为易，能够快速提高科技英语的阅读能力。

下面我就简单介绍一下科技英语的构词特点及学习小窍门

两个概念 Two concepts

01构词法：指的是从特定语言资源中按照一定的语义和结构模式创造新单词的过程Word formation is a process of creating new words from resources of a particular language according to certain semantic and structural patterns existing in the language.。

02什么是科技英语：科技英语可以定义为一种用来表达科技知识的英语这种类型的英语被用作科学家或专家在某些特定的科学技术领域中传递信息和交流成果的一种手段它可以被简称为“EST”其特点是：准确、清晰、简洁English for science and technology can be defined as a type of English used to express knowledge concerning science and technology. This type of English is employed as a means by which scientists or specialists use to transmit information and exchange achievements in some specific fields of science and technology. It can be called as “EST” for short.

Characteristics: Accuracy, Clarity, Simplicity

四种构词法

科技英语的构词主要有四种：合成法 （Compounding）、转化法（Conversion）、派生法（Derivation）和压缩法（Shortening and Abbreviation）There are 4 main ways of word formation: Compounding, conversion, derivation and shortening.

01合成法是把两个或两个以上的词基连接起来构成一个新词通常，第一个词基确定了第二个词基的关键特征Compounding is a way to create new words through linking together two or more bases. Normally, the first item identifies a key feature of the second word. 。

比如，我们日常常说的 Loudspeaker （扩音机），Well-known （副词+过去分词）著名的，众所周知的， By-product（介词+名词）副产品，Makeup（动词+副词）化妆等都是这类词汇。

下面我们来看一下萨拉拉项目标书中关于蒸汽轮机凝汽器材料的一段描述：The tubesheet material for titanium tubes should be solid titanium, and titanium-clad carbon steel tubesheets may be used with titanium tubes.

钛管的管板材料应为固体钛，钛复合碳钢管板可与钛管配套使用这短短一句话共含有三个合成词：Tubesheet=tube+sheet 管板Titanium tube 钛管titanium-clad carbon steel  钛复合碳钢。

大家找出来了么？

Central control building/room 中央控制楼（集控楼）/室Back pressure turbine 背压式汽轮机

02派生法是词基和词缀有意义的组合以生成新词Derivation is a meaningful combination of bases and affixes to produce new words.。

我们先了解几个概念：Prefix:We add prefixes before the base of a word.  前缀加在一个词的词基之前Suffix:We add suffixes after the base of a word. The main purpose of a suffix is to show what class of word it is (e.g. noun or adjective).。

后缀加在一个词的词基之后主要目的是显示一个词的词性Base:Abase is any structure to which an affix may be added. This means any root and stem can be termed as a base. Generally, a base is the fundamental meaning of a word.。

词基是指任何可以添加词缀的结构这意味着任何词根和词干都可以定义为词基一般来说，词基是一个词的基本意思e.g.  In cur able    in-:presfix 前缀 （改变词义to change the meaning of the word）这里in-指的是not;。

   cur:root 词根(词的原意the original meaning of the word) 这里指的是cure;  -able:suffix 后缀 (改变词性to change the speech of the word) 这里表示capable of .

     含义：不能治愈的

下面我们来看一段阿曼萨拉拉项目标书中关于海水淡化设备的描述： The pretreatment system shall include processes such as coagulation using aluminum or iron coagulants with pH correction if necessary, polyelectrolyte dosing, filtration using dual media (anthracite and sand) with or without a settlement or flotation stage preceding it, granular activated carbon filtration, disinfection followed by dechlorination, membrane filtration using ultrafiltration or microfiltration membranes. 

预处理系统应包括以下过程：使用铝或铁混凝剂进行混凝，并在必要时对pH值进行校正;使用聚电解质进行加药;使用双介质(无烟煤和沙子)进行过滤，而无需考虑在此之前有或没有沉降和浮沉阶段；用颗粒活性炭进行过滤，消毒之后脱氯，使用超滤或微滤膜进行膜过滤。

这段英语描述中包含前缀或后缀用法的单词有：pretreatment,settlement,coagulation,coagulant, polyelectrolyte,anthracite filtration,

anthracite, disinfection, dechlorination,ultrafiltration, microfiltration等. 这里重点分析一下 pretreatment, polyelectrolyte, 和filtration三个词。

1）先分析一下“Pretreatment”这个词： 前缀“pre-”来源于拉丁语，意为“before”；词根是 “treat”, 动词，意思处理；词缀是“-ment”，常用在动词后并改变其词性，由动词变为抽象名词，意思是“state, quality, act”。

这里指的是“act”因此，“pretreatment”意思是“预处理”拓展：①前缀：“pre-”它来源拉丁介副词,原意为before, beforehand 或in front，即表示时间或空间上的“前”。

它成为一个活性的派生词缀，能与许多单词缀合，起介词性或修辞性的作用当介词性的pre- 与名词缀合时，可能改变词基单词的词性当派生前缀pre-出现在以e开头的单词或大写字母时，要加连接字符（如pre-existing, pre-entered）。

此外，应注意原生前缀pre-中的e读短音/I/,而派生前缀pre- 中的e念长音/i:/（如prefer 读[prɪˈfɜːr]；prehistory读 [ˌpriːˈhɪstri]）e.g.precaution  [pre（=before）+cau ( =take care)事先小心，注意]

 n.care taken in advance to avoid a risk  小心，警惕，预防 As a precaution, please fasten your seat belt before starting the car.

作为一种预防措施，请在发动汽车之前系好安全带premature  [(pre( =before) +mat( =ripe)早一点熟的]adj. happening or coming before the proper time; too early, untimely 时机尚早的；太早的．不到期的；早产的。

 It would  be  premature to fire her;  shes still learning her job.  现在解雇她为时尚早，她还在熟悉工作。

②后缀“-ment”：表示行为，行为过程和结果alignmentn.formation in a line 直线排列 单词alignment中的a=to, at, lign=lineNext summer, all eight planets will be in perfect alignment.

明年夏天，八大行星将呈现完美的直线排列表示物Equipment （equip=装备、配备）n.设备，装备，器材I tried to fix the equipment but I failed.我想把机器修理好，但是失败了。

表示政府、机构Government （govern=管理，支配）政府、政体、统治
